LMF presented a rendition of Raag Adana by Gwalior Gharana's senior vocalist Ustad Ghulam Hassan Shaggan. The 87 year old maestro was the first recipient of LMF's 'Lifetime Achievement Award', presented by the illustrious Farida Khanum and Gwalior gharana's Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. The ceremony and performance took place at LMF's Gharana Festival on 29th April 2014. Supporting the ustad are son Qadir Ali and grandson Muslim Hassan. Tabla accompaniment is provided by Kashif Ali Dani, Harmonium by Mohammad Aslam and Ghulam Sabir provides support on the tanpura.
Ustad Ghulam Hassan Shaggan presents a Shabad in Raag Malkauns as a means to highlight the repertoire inherited from his Rababi ancestry. The Rababis, a clan of hereditary musicians claim to descend from Bhai Mardana, the lifelong Muslim companion of Guru Nanak Dev. This close knit community was employed by the Sikh community to perform kirtan in Gurdwaras prior to partition. The ustad said that his father, Sangeet Sagar Ustad Bhai Lal Muhammad used to perform the Shabad as part of kirtan duties at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
The performance below was part of the 9th Monthly concert organised by LMF on 25th November 2011 whereby the maestro was specially invited to present some exclusive compositions. Accompanying him are Qadir Ali and Muslim Hassan. Tabla support is by Kashif Ali Dhani, Sarangi accompaniment is by Shafqat Ali, Harmonium by Mohammad Aslam whilst Azhar Hussain and Nazeer Ahmed provide support on the tanpura.
